American singer/songwriter Russell Howard’s musical life began more or less immediately. The only child of two accomplished classical musicians, Russell spent countless hours bearing witness to the symphonic and operatic cannons before he uttered his first words. It was this abundant yet compulsory musical environment that both delayed and ensured Russell’s eventual embrace of popular music. After reluctantly studying violin for a decade, Russell picked up the guitar at 16, exploring the sounds of Jimi Hendrix and Pearl Jam before a copy of the Counting Crows’ August and Everything After set him on a new course.
Today, Russell thrives creating music in the narrow ground between out-and-out pop and introspective folk, capitalizing on the bombast and subtly of each respective genre. His Kick-Started 2012 EP City Heart was the first project to highlight this duality, leading the Dallas Morning News to extol Russell’s “creative coloring outside the lines dividing mainstream pop & indie folk." In 2013, Russell partnered with indie label Rock Ridge Music to release an expanded version of the project called City Heart +, and to take the show on the road. Between one offs with The Lumineers, Greg Laswell, and Joe Firstman, and tours with Sister Hazel, Howie Day, and Teddy Geiger, Russell’s soaring falsetto has captivated audiences from coast to coast.
Now the first artist on a brand new label, Russell is preparing to release his much anticipated debut LP in 2015. A coherent set of songs that finds the singer/songwriter confident in his vision while welcoming of new sounds, the as-yet-untitled release is a whole-hearted statement of purpose. Long time collaborator Lawson White (Santigold, Chromeo, MNDR) helms the project, recording at Good Child Music and Studio G in Brooklyn.
